RE: MULTICHOICE / DSTV… I dont know if people are aware of this, or if Im alone in having the following opinion but here goes… I arrived in Botswana from the UK in November last year with my Motswana wife. We decided to subscribe to DStv and were told by a very nice gentleman at Multichoice all the subscription prices - as I am mad on football, we opted for the premium package which we were told would cost P535… a bit pricey but within our budget. We were also informed that there are various boxes you can buy and what each box allows you to do. We went for a PVR box as it would allow us to record programmes, to watch at our leisure. We took it to Multichoice and got it registered. Our bill last month was P595, which we thought was odd and said we would question the next time we went to pay. We went in this week and asked the question and were told that as of April the fee for the premium package was to rise to P550 and there was an additional charge of P60 for the privilege of recording, fast forwarding, pausing and rewinding… therefore our monthly bill will be P610!?!? The lady at Multichoice was quite taken aback by the fact we questioned this fee. We were told we are the only people to have ever questioned this fee as most people are grateful for it. I realise I should not compare things with the UK all the time but in the UK, one supplier (i.e. Multichoice) can provide you with the equivalent to DStv premium (including the playback/record option) AND unlimited internet AND a landline contract for the same amount you pay here for just the premium package. Surely by purchasing a PVR box, which costs considerably more that a basic box, you are paying the higher rate to do what DStv is charging you more to do?? You dont buy a car with a sunroof and expect to be charged for the privilege of opening it. Youre basically forced to take the higher subscription that comes with the additional fee allowing you to record, rewind, etc… yet no-one points this out when you enquire about the service or when you get your PVR registered. Therefore you pay P1,500 for the PVR and get trapped into the higher subscription because you want to justify buying the PVR in the first place. Am I the only one who - A) thinks this additional fee is odd and unfair - B) a tiny bit greedy of DStv/Multichoice and a rip-off - C) unnecessary - D) Misleading and naughty that it is not mentioned at the point of subscribing??? Or am I the only one who is, according to the Multichoice employee, ungrateful?
