REFLECTIONS: Read a story recently in a fishing magazine about a massive pike that followed a lure right to the shore and then jumped out of the water trying to get it. The fish was carefully weighed- 28 pounds four ounces and returned unharmed. Brings back memories of a hot July afternoon at Sante,s Causeway on Redfield Lake, eastern South Dakota. I was using my new Zebco spinning outfit with a red and white daredevle with a strip of pork rind attached. I,d been plagued with some small largemouth bass and a perch far too small for the lure so put on a pike-sized daredevle in the only colour I had black and white. it certainly didn,t interest the greedy little bass, but nothing else either so it seemed plus I was constantly having to clean weeds off it. Frustrated I decided to reel faster and try something else so cranked in at a fair rate of knots and as I lifted the lure from the water the surface exploded and next I knew I was having the wind knocked out of me, I was almost knocked off my feet(after all I was only 12) and next I was scrambling on hands and knees trying to stop a five pound nine ounce largemouth bass returning to the lake it had just jumped out of. Okay I cheated-I didn,t catch the fish, but as there was no one else around I claimed it. Since then I,ve had trout and crappie,s jump in a boat I was fishing from and a big rainbow almost did at Banks Lake three years ago. Anyone else experience something similar?
