REFUGE AptART in association with ACTED is pleased to present “REFUGE” a group show featuring a collection of works direct from the al-Zataari refugee camp. Featuring pieces from both children and artists, the show provides an extraordinary and unprecedented look into the state of refuge through the art of who those who seek it. The exhibition includes multi-media paintings as well as photography. The opening reception will take place at the Dar Al-Anda Gallery on Wednesday, July 3rd from 6-8 PM. The exhibition is free, open to the public and will be on view until July 4th at 7 pm. The works are both individual and collaborative, exploring the mental and physical space of refuge among Syrian youth in Jordan. Created by over 500 Syrian children and a team of Syrian and international artists, the pieces reflect the shared experiences of a shattered homeland. The works were created as part of a month-long street art project inside the confines of al-Zataari, scrawling messages and splashing colours across the camp the people of Syria now call home. For the residents of the camp, the art creates ownership and improves their shared spaces from washrooms to wedding halls to water tanks. AptART is a group of artists and activists working to give maginalised youth a creative outlet with the aim of improving the difficult environments in which they live. Artists run projects with youth ranging from street kids in the Favelas of Brazil to former child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo to conflict affected youth inside Syria. AptART has joined force with ACTED projects funded by UNICEF in al-Zataatri. ACTED, an International Non-Governmental Organization operating in 34 countries worldwide, is currently responding to the Syrian refugee crisis by supporting Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Iraq, and Jordan. Specifically, in Za’atari refugee camp, ACTED is providing essential support in the form of water supply, camp cleaning, and hygiene awareness activities to approximately 125,000 persons.
