RIJIJU FOR TELECOM NETWORK IN ARUNACHAL VILLAGES ITANAGAR: Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju has requested Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to provide basic telecommunication facilities to all the villages and district headquarters. Still, 1,089 Arunachal villages are yet to receive basic telephone services through Village Public Telephone (VPT), 70 out of 188 sub-divisional headquarters and 2,886 out of 5,260 villages are yet to be covered by the mobile telephone services, Rijiju said. Except four sub-divisional headquarters in Nagaland and one in Manipur, all other northeastern states have cent per cent mobile coverage, Rijiju added. He has requested Prasad to implement Ph-VII GSM mobile expansion project soon to bring more and more villages under the mobile network, a source said here on Tuesday. Internet services in the form of Broadband, Wimax and 3G/EVDO are yet to be extended to district headquarters like Seppa, Anini, Koloriang and Hawai. Microwave towers have been installed in these stations for media upgradation but commissioning is getting delayed due to delay in procurement of equipment. The process needs to be expedited, Rijiju said. BSNL has BTS towers at Mengio, Nyimte, Sarli and Kheel erected long ago but equipment are yet to be installed and commissioned, he added. Many GSM BTS towers commissioned under USO project to provide mobile services to rural and remote urban areas are lying defunct. -TNN
