RIP Patricia Buttercup Ebanks. You are one of the women I loved and love and who enriched my life. Although we fell apart because perhaps we were too revolutionary and political and fiery and in love and at the same time immature, I have nothing but fond memories of the good times we had together in the 1960s and early 70s, In Jamaica, England and Jamaica again. Of the first night we saw ourselves as a couple, at a party in my family home in UpPark Camp. Of you appearing so shocking suddenly in my office at the Merton Borough News in Merton, England. I was so delighted I think I may have danced a jig. Of my bedsitter at 202 Worple Road in Wimbleton and how amusing you found the fact that we had to share a bathroom with the other tenants in the house. You stayed though, and we cooked and laughed and shared that stupid single bed. then you were gone, back to Jamaica. Of the arguments and fights and the discussions and tenderness and the leisurely visits to Hellshire when it was not the overwhelmed cesspool it is today, Of you in that burnt orange bikini that I could see like a beacon from the reef while I spear fished and in which I never tired of seeing you. Of the nights at Stables and Tit for Tat on Red Hills Road, where we danced and danced and laughed. Of the books we shared and the poetry. Of the lectures and meetings at the university. Of your wonderfully forceful opinions which I might have argued with, but which I never stopped enjoying. Your intellect and beauty brightened that segment of my life hugely and there is a corner of my mind and heart that will always be yours. Today is your memorial in Jamaica and I am sorry I cannot be there, but know that I honour you and love you. You will always be alive to me.
