RIP Timmy my toy Smurf. Ive had him over 30 years. I placed him by my bedside for nostalgic reasons. Found mutilated in Dugs lair, alongside a pillowcase from my washing line, and a trowel I use in my Veg patch. The lettuce has been dug up too, thanks Dug... This is his new phase. Stealing items not left laying around (so far everything he has damaged has been easily available to him, so responsibility has been assumed for that. We lifted our game. Rarely left him unsupervised. Moved vulnerable items from his bedroom). Kidnap and contraband... I imagine him thinking ahead now, of the long night, bored. What to steal in plain sight, and hide, for later. Ill be doing searches before bedtime, in future. Removing washing from the line at the end of the day (better than a week later, LOL), and scanning each room, Terminator-style, before I put Dug to bed for the night. Rex is mortified. His face upon my discovery of each pile of chewed debris is wrenching. I wonder how he deals with Dug, as Dug is up to mischief? He has no part in it, but he does not stop Dug, nor does he alert me, yet Im always told when Dug is in need. Rex is receiving more praise and appreciation than usual, for being non-destructive. Without Dugs recent phase, we barely thank Rex for what he is not. Interesting, for in creating attention for NOT chewing, NOT being hyper, naughty and bullish, for sure Rex is being physically praised, BUT Im sustaining the frequency of what is unwanted - destruction. Even this post; I dont want my possessions destroyed, but even if I think of the opposite, Dug will not chew, or even, Dug is a good dog, Im focussed on an unwanted. You cant ask for the opposite of what youre getting if youre focussed on what you are getting. You simply sustain what you have. Practice it. Get more of the same. Its why affirmations dont work. I may be chanting, Dug is a good boy, but Im feeling I dont want Dug to destroy anything, so Im desperately pretending he is not what Ive clearly witnessed with my own senses, and what I know to be true for every dog Ive known in my entire life. You cant buck a belief system as strong as this! Talk truly is cheap. A clever friend told me about the Squirrel effect, however. Its why I am obsessed with squirrels. Sure, theyre cute, but seriously, Im more a bunny person. Quite simply, if youre consumed by something, an experience that is less than you want, you cant change it by continuing to focus on it, just prettying the experience up with hollow words. Good work sustaining the experience! Excellent technique for remaining stuck in unpleasant and generating momentum so it haunts you frequently, for days... If you were a dog like Dug, youd notice a squirrel, a roo, perhaps. A butterfly, and be off on a new frequency of thoughts and feelings, leaving unwanted right where you left it. Now focussed on a high frequency of cuteness, exhilaration and distraction, youre no longer sustaining the unwanted. You can pick it up again if you decide to phone a friend and tell them ALL about it, so dont, unless you need to experience more of the same, increasing in intensity. SQUIRREL! Means youre getting off the slippery slope. At the frequency of squirrel are inspired ideas, solutions of higher quality and effectiveness than you could muster while distressed. At the frequency of squirrel lies relief and harmony. Of course it doesnt alter the need to clean up the mess, but youll do it later, with a smile, compassion for the little pup who acts on compulsion, never means to hurt you. Ridiculous human for even coming to such far-fetched and self-pitying conclusions. Its just a toy, a stolen handbag, a crashed car, a divorce... Just an experience you created by participation, and can choose how to continue to experience by your attention to whatever aspect of the experience YOU choose. OR Squirrel! Take a break from the experience. Focus on delight. Become inspired. Return to the situation with a better perspective. Fix it up from there... Dug aint in the doghouse but in my arms. Adored. Ill forget Timmy Smurf, but Ill never forget my Squirrel-Dog. XJ
