ROCK & BLUES MUSEUM APRIL 2014 NEWSLETTER (Clarksdale, Mississippi) - Through one of the longest cold spells in Mississippis recent history, students and visitors from as close as Memphis and from as far away as Thailand, Australia, Brazil, UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, and Sweden traveled to Clarksdale, MS and toured the Rock & Blues Museum the past couple months. A facade grant from The Delta Bridge Project, in partnership with Southern Bancorp Community Partners, paid for new signage, new windows and the beginning of our mural on the outside wall of the museum building. The first hand painted mural panel has been completed by Mac Crank and features Mississippi blues singers Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry, Sean Bad Apple, T-Model Ford and Robert Bilbo Walker. Clarksdales 11th annual Juke Joint Festival coming this April has become a three and a half day event for the Rock & Blues Museum with musicians performing outside the museum starting on Thursday, April 10, through Sunday, April 12, 2014; see jukejointfestival for the schedule of events at the Rock & Blues Museum on 113 East 2nd Street. On Friday, April 11, 2014, a reception will be held in Museum from 5-7 pm for the new art exhibit from Liz Mandeville entitled Views From The Van which features fresh acrylic landscapes & blues artists at work. On Saturday, April 12, 2014, a reception and fundraiser for the Rock & Blues Museum will be held from 5-7 pm in the museum. The reception celebrates our new exhibits for Mose Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Fat Possum Records. The exhibit for Mose Allison features a handwritten letter to him from Sonny Boy Williamson, and photos donated by John Allison. Allison was born in the Mississippi Delta on his grandfathers farm in 1927 and became a well known jazz and blues pianists. His first solo album was recorded in 1957. Mose Allison Sings was released in 1964 which paid tribute to artists like Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Rodgers and Willie Dixon. His own composition, Parchman Farm became an international hit and many artists have covered it. The permanent museum exhibit for Stevie Ray Vaughan, SRV, includes posters, albums, an autographed photo, a back stage pass and, taking center stage, a unique SRV satin jacket (Only 3 jackets were made at the time: one for Vaughan, one for Chuck Permenter and, on display, the one for Chucks wife, Diane). The jacket was designed by the late Chuck Permenter, formerly of Whisky Blues here in Clarksdale. The jacket, photo and back stage pass were donated to the museum by Chuck’s wife, Diane. Chuck and Stevie were close friends during the early 1980s. Included in the exhibit is a photo of Permenter playing guitar in front of the remnants of Muddy Waters cabin on the Stovall Plantation in the 1980s before the remnants were removed. The Fat Possum Records exhibit displays a collection of Hill Country blues records and posters of Mississippi artists like R. L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford and Robert Wolfman Belfour, all discovered by this Mississippi Indie record label based in Oxford, Mississippi. Coming up in May is annual Clarksdale Caravan Music Fest, the billboard is up on Highway 61 and we are working on our lineup of performing artists. Save the dates for the weekend after the Blues Music Awards . . . Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 9 through 11, 2014. Two stages . . . Cat Head Delta Blues and Folk Art and the Rock & Blues Museum.
