Race report, aka What Price Vanity? Colonial Heritage 5K, 19:03, 4th overall. I stated in last weeks race report that I would be skipping this weeks race and volunteering. That was the plan. So then I showed up this morning...I looked around...and I thought, Hmmm...I could win this thing... Yup, vanity took over (which is strange because Im generally SOOOOO humble - like probably the most humble person ever). Rick Platt had enough volunteers, and I was pre-registered, so I decided Id warm up and see how I felt. So I did, and I felt fine - no pain, no indication of a hamstring pull. Then I did 5 strides, and again, no indication of a hamstring pull. So I raced. I took off, and I felt great; looked down, 5:17 pace by Garmin, so I throttled back, settled in to a 5:30 pace, felt strong, thought Oh yeah, Im killing it. Im not just gonna win, Im gonna win BIG. Then, at 0.47 miles by Garmin, ZOINK - hamstring goes. Tried to hang on to pace, couldnt, Mathew Cheruiyot passed me (he went on to win), Alexey Popov passed me. Then, at around halfway point, started to feel sharp pain. So. I have learned my lesson (er, re-learned). Should this happen again, I will not test my hamstring until I have run PAIN-FREE for at least a week. And the test will start with a few strides after an easy run. I mean it!
