Random historical yum-yum of the day: Washington, DC was, at one point during the American Civil War, the most fortified city in the world with 68 forts, 93 artillery batteries, 7 blockhouses, 20 miles of rifle pits, and 30 miles of military roads. All of it was linked together in a huge circular earth and timber embankment surrounding the capital, enclosing 33 square miles and manned by over 20,000 men and over 1,500 artillery pieces.
