Rangers Await CAF Verdict Today -Antelopes Remain Hopeful, Despite Group Openers By Bibian Onwugbolu, In Owerri Astonishing information from the camp of rangers International of Enugu indicates that The Coal City club is still looking up to an appearance in the ongoing group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, despite action in the round robin stage already underway. SportsDay can report that officials of The Flying Antelopes are actually still holding unto a strong belief that they will get positive words from CAF today over their appeal over the continental soccer governing body’s decision to eject the Enugu-based club on account of allegedly fielding an ineligible player during their last knock-out match against SC Sfaxien of Tunisia. Although the second-tier continental competition’s group phase kicked-off last weekend, Rangers believe their appeal to CAF over the decision to send The Coal City club packing will turn out to be their saving grace. SportsDay learnt on arrival in Rangers’ camp ahead of yesterday evening’s Federation Cup clash with Akwa United of Uyo at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri that the club is still pursuing its appeal to CAF over the decision disqualifying the team from playing in the tournament, because of a protest by Sfaxien. Incisive checks by SportsDay revealed that CAF actually communicated with Rangers officially over the issue this past Tuesday, while also intimating the club officials that the appeals committee met on Saturday, 20th July. Although Sfaxien played their first group match of the competition last Sunday, July 21st, CAF kept Rangers’ hopes alive after sending a mail to Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) concerning the appeal. The CAF mail, a copy of which was made available to SportsDay, dated July 23rd, 2013 stated: “We are in receipt of your letter and we thank you for it. “Appeal Committee that met on July 20th will take its decision known as soon as finalised. As you may know, legal decisions need to be completed in writing prior to informing you. You will receive such decision within d next 48 hours.”
