Rapid population growth has complicated efforts to reduce poverty and eliminate hunger in Africa. Between 1990 and 2004 the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day in the world decreased from 31.6% to 19.2%, but in Africa the percentage fell from 46.8% to just 41.1%. Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, is still struggling to eliminate hunger and poverty, and the region’s projected population growth will, no doubt, hamper progress.
