Read todays devotion from The Word Speaks a daily devotional based on the sayings of Jesus. Things of God (Mark 8:33) I am frequently like the apostle Peter. It saddens my heart and grieves my Lord even more. Let me explain. Jesus told his disciples briefly but pointedly about his coming death. Peter took Jesus aside and rebuked him for talking about defeat. Jesus said to him, “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men” (Mark 8:33). Peter was thinking about earthly kingdoms. The idea of swelling crowds of supporters and many more blessings of a fulfilled life for all the Jews under Jesus’ rule seems to have been uppermost in Peter’s mind. Lord, forgive me for earthly thinking. I don’t doubt the all-sufficient ransom that Jesus paid for sin. But sometimes I lose sight of his plans for me and his church. I forget that his plans are perfect, or I see worldly obstacles and not divine power. My vision can be limited. I pray that God leads me to see the wisdom of his plan and to recognize that his plan is better than mine. Do you have the same problem? Welcome to the sinful human race. Jesus still kept Peter as an apostle. Peter’s faith grew, and he became a mighty instrument in God’s hand. What grace! Our God never changes. He treats us the same way he treated Peter. He confronts our lack of spiritual insight, but he also conveys his forgiveness. His grace overwhelms us because he does not reject us for our stupidity of thinking we know better. He helps us understand and trust him as his plan unfolds in our lives. Enjoy the journey, knowing that God’s plan is the best plan. Prayer: Jesus, forgive me when I assume I know better than you do. Amen. From The Word Speaks by Kenneth Kratz © 2011 Northwestern Publishing House. All rights reserved.
