Real talk for a moment. Ive received a few messages asking me to post (or why I havent posted about) a story involving a young cosplayer assaulted at SDCC. Ultimately it boils down to wanting to give the family privacy. While I understand the desire to spread the news and help, I also greatly sympathize with wanting space, having had news anchors knock on my parents door with cameras ready hours after my brother passed away. Especially when minors are involved, I tend to let stories like these pass and police do their job. Not that I harbor any ill-will towards those who shared. I understand the goal was to gather leads. That being said, It is important to discuss concerns of harassment, and worse, assault, at large gatherings like SDCC. This year seems to have been a particularly bad one for the show. Even I had had a shock-jock style cameraman come up and ask about my bra preferences, after shoving a camera in a friends face without permission. While no where near as devastating as being physically assaulted (of which happened to more than one individual), this sort of behavior fosters a general disrespect for boundaries which can lead down an even more dangerous road. Hopefully some actionable insights come from all these unfortunate scenarios, and we can work with staff to wipe away bad (and criminal) behavior from the convention.
