Reality Meets Science (tm) DONT BE FOOLED BY SLICK High Protein ON MARKETING GENERAL MILLS DRY CEREALS ALERT! These new General Mills high-protein dry cereal products are a joke (sorry General Mills). They have virtually no extra protein of any clinical significance vs regular Cheerios (which is another low-quality whole-grain product). See the labels & remember to look at the serving size in terms of GRAM weight. Example: if one has a 30g serving size and the other has a 55 or 60 g serving size, then you will have to double the product with the 30g serving size nutritional numbers to make sure that you are comparing equal serving sizes! Dont trust the serving size on the box for what youll want to eat as a free human being! WE choose our serving sizes as human beings not based on what the company dictates, but, rather what gets us full & satisfied (and happy)! All the pictures attached provide the evidence for this RMS post. And in terms of the Fiber One high-protein product (described on the box as a sweetened granola cereal in small hope the customer doesnt see this writing), it has 220 cal for what the same serving size (2oz/60g) of original Fiber One cereal would only provide less than 120 cal (Thanks largely to original Fiber One being truly high in fiber - Remember everyone, Fiber One is a BRAND, not a specific product, Fiber One has several different products and you must be careful not to believe that all the Fiber One products have the same nutritional quality as the Fiber One brands original cereal product) The bottom line, theres no magic to dry cereal...Because of their calorie density they are always going to be high in calories per bite. Dry cereals are, after all, DRY! And therefore they cannot have the magic advantage of whole fruits and vegetables, for instance, which are full of WATER content – yet still solid foods – providing fullness and satisfaction with less calories at equal serving sizes (see my YouTube on why fruit is not a high carbohydrate food category). For instance, an ounce of blueberries as only 15 cal or less while an ounce of Cheerios has well over 100 because much of the weight of blueberries is water, very little sugar/carbohydrate and a lot of fiber and micronutrients/antioxidants. So since dry cereals are packed with dry carbs, its hard to find one that has the type of balance between their high calories/carbs and the healthier components we look for like high-fiber, reasonable protein and low or no sodium. In that regard, my favorite 3 cereals are any plain shredded wheat, The original Fiber One cereal and The Kashi GoLean that has 13g of protein per cup (50g). Just like Fiber One, Kashi GoLean is a brand, not a specific product. So the specific product Im talking about has the 13g of protein, 10g of fiber on the box – which you see pictured in this post. With all that said – I hope you know no better where REALITY MEETS SCIENCE tm When it comes to hunting down a healthier dry cereal in the grocery store aisles. TIP: If you have a healthy cereal that youd like to suggest & write in the comments section of this post – generally it should have not much more than 100mg sodium per reasonable serving size (all three of the favorites I described meet this criteria and shredded wheat has of course zero sodium - & I like mixing shredded wheat with some unsweetened organic soy milk, one packet of Truvia & a teaspoon of PB2 low-fat peanut butter powder); Any reasonably healthy dry cereal should also have their protein grams PLUS their fiber grams together multiplied by 10 be a number that is approaching (if not more than) the calories. For instance, the Kashi GoLean As 13 g of protein and 10 g of fiber – together this is 230 when multiplied by 10 which is significantly higher than its 160 calories. That is GOOD. Other Kashi GoLeans meet this criteria as well, but ONLY the ones that have double-digit protein grams (11-13 grams) per serving NOTE, all my fave dry cereals -None of which I eat dramatic amounts of because Im simply not a big fan of eating excessive amount of grains, notably - blend great in small amounts with protein, veggies, fruit smoothies in a NutriBullet.
