Reality check of the night: Preached a funeral/memorial service - TopicsExpress

Reality check of the night: Preached a funeral/memorial service today. It was for a man in his 60s whod had some health issues recently. Afterward we did a short graveside service, and walking back to my car when that was over, I noticed an old grave marker. It was a simple white stone cross, which had sunk down into the ground a bit and begun to fall over. I looked closely at the marker, but it was so weathered and old, I could only make out one letter, which I think was a D.....Its a startling reality for me, that eventually there will be nobody around who remembers my name. Eventually, even my own family tree will branch out to a point that they wont mention or think about great grandpa, or great-great uncle Adam. Thatll be true for all of us, ya know? But, as I was reminded of at a conference I attended recently, eventually people may not know your name, but you can live in such a way that they can know what kind of character and example and faithfulness you must have shown, simply by looking at the legacy youve left. Im thinking, if I havent already, its about time I start living as if my name will fade but my example wont. How about you?
