Really everyone, quite freaking out about this. Are you so fantastic at math that you even get to criticize another way of teaching it? This article pretty much covers it - its math we do all the time, or it is, if you understand the relationship between numbers. If our kids have to longhand add and subtract, then they do not get it. Also, as the article says, they do still teach the old way, but they teach them the new way because it explains WHY the old way works. As a nation that sucks at math overall (29th in the world, behind RUSSIA), I think all the complainers need to shut up and go back to complaining about math being so hard. Its hard for you because you were not taught why it works the way it works. And besides, you use common core every day, you just dont call it that!
