Really honored, excited, curious and intrigued by this. I was selected as of the Cultural Agents of the 2nd National Cohort of the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture (Nope, its not a white house dept. Its a non-profit. And why shouldnt we have a Dept. of Arts & Culture?) My first mission? Is hosting an imagining with community folk and artists to envision and realize the transformative power of art and culture that integrated into the fabric of our society. In particular my hope is that well look at the social issues facing our city and how arts and culture can help advance social justice. Gentrification, police violence, labor rights, immigrant justice are the main issues (along with others) that the event will address. There will be imaginings through out the U.S. but Ill be hosting one in NYC. So Ill be reaching out to you community organizers, activists and artists. The event will most likely in June 2015. The U.S. Department of Arts and Culture (USDAC) is the nations newest people-powered department, founded on the truth that art and culture are our most powerful and under-tapped resources for social change. Radically inclusive, useful and sustainable, and vibrantly playful, the USDAC aims to spark a grassroots, creative change movement, engaging millions in performing and creating a world rooted in empathy, equity, and social imagination.
