Rebecca has an unusual question, but maybe some of you have been in her shoes and can help with her problem: “I am a science/SETSS teacher in the Bronx, N.Y. For science, I have about 150 students in 3rd and 4th grades. I am planning on taking 32 students with me on a field trip next month. The students that I end up picking will be ones whove demonstrated to me that theyre well-behaved, inquisitive, and overall hard workers. Ive announced to all classes that I have been watching them closely for weeks to help make my decision. I am saddened that I cant take more than 32 students, but the truth of the matter is, that is what it has to be. Furthermore, I am concerned about the backlash that I may receive from parents when they find out that their child was not chosen. How do I deal with parents if they do get upset, and what do I tell the students who didnt get picked, particularly the ones who were close to making the cut, but didnt?”
