Redneck Farm Woman Diary: We will have 40 hot, young chicks - TopicsExpress

Redneck Farm Woman Diary: We will have 40 hot, young chicks living at our house next Tuesday! Yep, I ordered 40 new chickens from Theisens which will be delivered under heat lamp..teehee. These are Barred Rock (heritage - non GMO) chickens. They are considered dual purpose but I wont be keeping them for egg production since they are going into the freezer. My dad and I looked up some homemade chicken pluckers on line. We chose one we really like that will completely pluck a chicken in 15 to 20 seconds!!! If you have ever plucked a chicken, you would know how wonderful this will be! You throw the chicken (already dead) into the plucker and it spins around in there while you spray water on it. The rubber hose fingers take all the feathers off without bruising. The feathers all flush out the bottom on to the ground. Not one feather was left behind!! Easiest thing Ive ever seen. We are going to make our own. Its made of 2 x 4s but I have several 2 x 6s that came out of the machine shed after we replaced them with 2 x 8s so I plan to use those..FREE! Dad already has an oversized bucket (big enough to do a turkey too) ..FREE. Dad also has an electric motor that came off a big commercial fan. The fan no longer works but the motor runs..perfect...FREE! Then we just need a few screws, rubber hose (for the plucking fingers), nuts and washers. I also want to pick up four locking caster wheels to make it easier to move around. I will be surprised if we have more then $25.00 into this. SCORE! Yes, Sally Howell, you can borrow it! Necessity is the inspiration for inventions! Ok, that and the fact that I am an Inspiring Environmentalist (sounds better than tightwad). I am grateful that my dad is not only an Inspiring Environmentalist too but he also has an engineers mind when it comes to making things. Yeah me! On the other hand, the chickens we have, ate cottage cheese for breakfast and are enjoying a beautiful day in the sun scratching for bugs. Yep, these new chickens will have a wonderful, happy life before landing in our freezer. That is what is important. Its not the fact that they die because we all must die unless Christ comes back first. Its how we live while we are here that counts! As always, God only makes good days!
