Regarding Selective Logic and “Independence Day”… Time. Place. Circumstance… in short, context is very important when analyzing history. I strive not to propagate what I deem to be “selective logic”. Inasmuch, a few anti-Independence Day posts [online] have sparked my analysis… Some folk say “Independence Day” should not be a day of celebration for “African-Americans” because on July 4, 1776 “we” were slaves. I get it... I contend on face value- that stance makes sense… Then I began to think to myself… During the Thanksgiving season in 1776 were African-Americans slaves? On December 25, 1776 were African-Americans slaves? I have yet to see an “African American” say they do not celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas because there was a time when “we” were slaves while the mass celebrated. I do know African-Americans who feel “Thanksgiving” is a time that celebrates thankfulness and family. Specifically, they are not celebrating the “Pilgrims and Indians” by their family-based fellowship because that’s not their intention… I wonder if the same thought process can be applied to “Independence Day?” I contend that that one can always find a reason to be dissatisfied if one chooses to search...
