Relay for Life 2014 is now just a good memory (or it will be as soon as our legs quit aching)! There were a lot of miles put in this year - Dan did 30 miles in honor of this being the 30th year for Relay, Marc did 28 miles, Karen did 20 miles and the rest of the team all did lots of miles but I think these 3 were our long distance walkers. If you did more and I missed you, let me know how many miles you did and Ill post it. I think I was the real straggler this year - I only did 11 miles!! For me, the most impressive time of the Relay - and there were so many - was the luminaria ceremony. Bags lined the entire track - and its 1/4 mile - so many people lost to this terrible disease. All were lit, we listened to a young man tell his story of cancer as a baby and into his childhood. Cancer took his eyesight but not his life or his desire to find a cure. After his talk, all lights were turned off, a bagpiper played Amazing Grace very quietly. The walkers on the track parted, he walked down the center of all of us and we followed him around the track in silence as we honored the fallen. It was so very moving and emotional. When we saw all the names, pictures and dedications to the ones who did not make it, it certainly made our team dedicate themselves to working even harder this next year to being part of finding a cure. I am so very proud of every member of Its a Family Affair for all the hard work and dedication this year. We were a first year team in Tacoma and learned a lot that will help us out as we look forward to Relay for Life 2015. Other highlights - Jesse looked so good in his dress and he walked around the track as Mr. Relay. Im sure it has to be hard for a guy to put on a dress, make-up and carry a purse out in front of thousands of people but Jesse carried it and made us proud. Zach and JoJo won the Road to Recovery car race. Zach picked up JoJo in his car (cardboard), took him to his treatment and then headed back home with him. These are kind Fred Flintsone where it runs by foot power and the boys moved pretty fast. Always knew his race car driving experience would come in handy!! There were different speakers sharing their experiences - these speakers are our inspiration - they were all survivors. This is just a little of our weekend but I could go on and on about this Relay experience but it would be too much reading, All I can say is that I think all of you, if you are not already part of a team, you should think about becoming a part of one. It will change your outlook at life.
