Released as a single in 1971, Lets Stay Together reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained on the chart for 16 weeks and also topped Billboards R&B chart for nine weeks.[1] It was ranked the 60th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[2] It was selected by the Library of Congress as a 2010 addition to the National Recording Registry, which selects recordings annually that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.[3] The song went on to claim the number-one position on the Billboard Year-End chart as an R&B song for 1972. Eleven years old in the 7th grade (Junior High). I had spent elementary grades 1-6 in small rural town with a population 500. In our 7th grade we were bussed 15 miles from home and attended school with the city kids. The school principal was strict . He allowed no long hair for boys. It couldnt touch the collar in the back or the ears on the side. I cant imagine how we were given permission to play records (45s) in the school cafeteria during lunch. This song was probably played everyday for who knows how many weeks. https://youtube/watch?v=COiIC3A0ROM
