The Gibeonites feared Israel, so they altered their appearance to trick the Israelites into believing that they were not Canaanites at all. They requested safety from Israel. The Israelite leaders inspected them, but forgot to seek wisdom from God.The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord (Joshua 9:14).As a result of their haste, the Israelites made an alliance with the Gibeonites, violating their divine instructions.
