Rep. Blackwell to Serve as Judge for Statewide Contest OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. Gus Blackwell announced today he will serve as a judge for a statewide essay contest for eighth grade students. The contest, “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” is sponsored by the Mayor Council of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Municipal League. The essays, which are not to exceed 250 words, will be judged on how well they demonstrate knowledge about municipal government and the role of the mayor, their creativity and the proper spelling and use of grammar. “I feel this is an excellent opportunity for students to begin to learn how government at all levels affects their lives,” said Blackwell, R-Laverne. The winner will receive $250, the runner-up will receive $150 and third place will receive $100. Essays must be received no later than Dec. 13, 2013. Contest winners, along with their parents and teachers, will be recognized during the Mayor Council of Oklahoma / Oklahoma Municipal League Legislative Forum. The forum will be held on March 10, 2014, at the Oklahoma State Capitol. To enter, complete entry form and attach to your one-page essay. The student’s name, teacher or parent’s name and school must appear at the top of the essay.
