Repatriate Michael Campbell. Posted on July 23, 2013 From January 2008 Co Louth Irish Republican Michael Campbell has been imprisoned in Lithuania after he was lured there and arrested in an entrapment operation led by M15 and Lithuanian Intelligence agencies. For three years he was held on remand until being sentenced to 12 years in 2011, he is currently serving his sentence in medieval conditions in a Lithuanian prison once used for holding victims of the Holocaust. Michael McLaughlin of the IRSP continues “Since Michael Campbell’s imprisonment in Lithuania concern has been growing amongst Human Rights watchdogs and Political Prisoner support groups in Ireland and the USA over the conditions he is being held in. He is serving his sentence in Lukiskes Prison in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Lukiskes Prison has a brutal regime where political prisoners are detained in small cells with common criminals, people with mental health issues and Heroin addicts for 23 hours per day laying on damp thin mattresses on the floor, two people have attempted suicide in the cell with Michael since 2009. The conditions of the cells are medieval they are infested with Maggots and Cockroaches and inmates are forced to eat, sleep and use the toilet in the cell, which is a hole in the middle of the floor, whilst being denied proper hygiene products; each inmate only gets allocated less than one roll of toilet paper per month. Michael Campbell is only allowed one shower per week and only leaves his cell once per day to use the “exercise yard” which is a 10ft by 10ft room. He is unable to communicate with anyone in Lukiskes Prison and only gets limited contact with his family as there is no regular post.” Mr McLaughlin finishes “The IRSP believes that the conditions of Michael Campbell’s imprisonment in Lithuania are in clear breach of his human rights as a political prisoner and we fully support the calls for his repatriation to Ireland to serve out the remainder of his sentence. To highlight Michael Campbell’s case the IRSP and the Repatriate Michael Campbell Campaign Group will be holding a White-Line protest at 2pm on Saturday 27th of August at the Strabane-Lifford Bridge and border crossing. We would urge all Irish Republicans and Socialists in the Strabane area to attend the White-Line protest in support of Michael’s repatriation to Ireland. Michael’s case is a humanitarian issue that all Irish Republicans and progressives should support we need to build the political momentum to get him home. For updates on the campaign to get Michael back home to Ireland to serve out the remainder of his sentence go to Facebook and search for the Repatriate Michael Campbell Campaign Facebook page.”
