Report on Wexford People Premier Minor Hurling - 2nd July 2014 Buffers Alley 1-12 Glynn/Barntown 1-05 With a win, a draw and a loss in the preceeding three games, the Buffers Alley minor hurlers came out all guns blazing in round 4 of the Premier Minor Hurling Championship to see off a fancied Glynn/Barntown side who were undefeated prior to this game. Glynn/Barntown had home advantage but Buffers Alley started the game with the wind at their backs and a steely determination that served them well throughout the game. A fine long range effort from Ross Donohoe sailed over the bar early in proceedings to signal the intent of the visiting team and from this early score until half time the Alley boys hunted in packs and limited the opposition to two points for the entire half. Meanwhile Buffers Alley added six points, three from Owen Dempsey, (2f) one from John Lee Meyler and two from Ross Donohoe (1f, 1Pen). With the scoreline reading 0-07 to 0-02 at the break, the Alley boys went in knowing that the same mammoth effort would be needed in the second half against the wind to thwart the expected onslaught from the home side. On the resumption, it was obvious that Buffers Alley had lost none of their focus and added two early points courtesy of an Owen Dempsey free and a gem from the hurl of Ciarán Murphy. It was then the turn of Glynn/Barntown to make some headway and they duly obliged with a goal and a point in quick succession to leave the scoreboard reading 1-03 to 0-09. It looked set to be a tension filled last 15 minutes but this was the time for the Alley boys to really shine as John Lee Meyler popped over another point followed by a second Ciarán Murphy effort. When John Furlong latched on to a delivery from Ross Donohoe and rattled the net it was no more than the Alley deserved as they had battled manfully launching attack after attack on the Glynn/Barntown goal. Our defence led by John Farrell was in no mood to concede much and they were ably assisted by John Lee Meyler, Ross Donohoe and Ciarán Murphy who broke the hearts of the Glynn/Barntown outfit with their attacking runs through the middle. Owen Dempsey and John Furlong led up front where the forwards worked hard to keep the ball in the danger area and make life difficult for the opposition. The game finished 1-12 to 1-05 and a deserved two points gained by Murt Mangan’s young guns at this midway stage of the Premier Hurling Championship.
