Republicans have let the country down. Obviously. Play time is over; True Republicans must put their unruly, spoiled, and obnoxious children to bed and get serious. Our system requires two functioning and serious political parties. Third parties can be useful in expressing underrepresented voices, as the Tea Party clumsily and recklessly is doing now, but if the system is going function we must have two major political parties who seriously engage the issues of the day. Ted Cruzs extraordinary measures last week draw in sharp contrast the Tea Party highjacking the GOP. For years weve nervously laughed at Tea Party ahistorical constitutionalism and mathfree economics, but we can no longer equivocate or repress the ugly truth: the Tea Party is dangerous. John Boehners weakness in the face of back-benchers and the 2012 presidential primaries gave clues, but few among us really accepted the facts of how the tea party broke the republicans. We (all Americans) need the Republican Party nursed back into a serious political party. We need them to grow up (again). The GOP may not rise out of dysfunction, but I am encouraged by thoughtful conservatives like Andrew Sullivans analysis of the party unfit to govern. And prominent republicans are forcefully calling out the Tea Party wing and trying to reclaim the GOP. John Taft, a True Republican if there ever was one, considers the Ted Cruz highjacking of the GOP. Taft gravely cites the moment U.S. Army chief counsel, Joseph N. Welch demanded Senator McCarthys attention, then said: “Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness.” Welch later uttered his most famous words asking the senator: “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” John Tafts piece in the New York Times today asks Senator Cruz, at long last, have you left no sense of decency? It is a rhetorical question.
