Ridgeroad Middle School was recently named a Silver Award Winner - TopicsExpress

Ridgeroad Middle School was recently named a Silver Award Winner in the Arkansas Green School Challenge and received a $250 award. Now in its third year, the Arkansas Green Schools Challenge is a joint initiative of USGBC Arkansas and the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators (AAEA). The program pairs a USGBC professional mentor with a student team with the challenge to “Green Your School.” Schools work with their mentors from October to March to choose a project, plan and implement it, and submit their results to USGBC in the form of a written report and a short video. The Arkansas Green Schools Challenge has now reached over 80 schools and over 13,500 students. This year’s student projects included initiating school-wide and community recycling programs, reducing energy usage and water usage in their school buildings, planting school vegetable gardens, harvesting rainwater with rain barrels and cisterns to water school gardens and landscaping, building school composting bins, and designing outdoor classrooms. Winning schools will receive their trophies and cash awards at their local school board meeting or a school assembly between now and May 15. The primary mission of the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council Arkansas Chapter (USGBC-AR) is to educate professionals and the public about sustainable design and building practices. The Chapter also promotes policies that will create sustainable communities in the region. Contact us at usgbc-ar.org or [email protected] for more information about the chapter and the Arkansas Green Schools Challenge. Congratulations Ridgeroad Middle!
