Rivers Begins 3-month Long PH Centennial Celebration By: Anayo Onukwugha The Rivers State government will today, begin a three-month long celebration to mark the 100 years of Port Harcourt as a city. The then 25 kilometre square city was founded on August 30, 1913 and named Port Harcourt by former Governor-General of Nigeria, Lord Federick Lugard. Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, chairman of the Centennial Celebration Committee and Secretary to the state government, Mr. George Feyii, said the celebration will start with a marathon race. Feyii stated that the celebration which would be rounded off in December 2013, with an award night for 100 eminent personalities, who contributed to the development of the city. He said; “Events for the celebration of 100 years of Port Harcourt will hold till December 2013. There will be football tournament as well as exhibitions on how Port Harcourt has developed. We will use the opportunity to update our museum. “The celebration will also feature a beauty pageant, which will produce Miss Centennial. We will hold a symposium with the theme, Port Harcourt; Now, Tomorrow and the Future. “We will develop a monument that shall be unveiled to celebrate the centennial. We will also identify certain individuals, about 100 of them who contributed to the development of Port Harcourt at an award night."
