Road story? Here ya go. About a million years ago I had gotten pretty used to flying to the city where I would finish a run, rent a car, and then drive to the first city. Usually the drive to the first city was about 5 hours. On this particular trip I flew into Baltimore and as usual went to the nearest ALAMO to get my car, because Alamo would rent for cash. I had made a reservation for the three weeks I needed the car and showed up at Alamo in plenty of time to get the vehicle and then drive into western Ohio For the start of a Keith Gisser week. I loved working for Keith for a few reasons and NONE of them were the gigs themselves. Rather I would get to spend time with Keith and Becky and I would pop for corned-beef or lox or both on my off days, and we would feast. For those of you who have never known his hospitality, you missed something! Anyway, I arrive at Alamo, only to find out that they tripled my deposit for my rental. I offered to change my rental from 3 weeks to 3 one-week rentals but the mgr was unable to understand the arithmetic and refused. I put a call into corporate and waited for almost 4 hours at the Alamo office until the secretary to the president of Alamo called back and made it work. In the interim the 4 hours were spent sitting on the floor in their lobby because the mgr reasoned to me that if she let me have one of the unused chairs behind their desk, they would have to give one to everybody. Finally she approached me and explained that the deposit was needed in case I exceeded the mileage limit and that she was very sorry. I explained that Alamo offered unlimited miles. But that math was too complicated as well.. I offered to cancel the reservation and make a new one, but that too was beyond her. Finally the exec-secretary from corporate called and personally cancelled my reservation. She asked to speak to me but the mgr said that customers were not allowed to use the company phones, so she took the corporate secretarys phone number, gave it to me, and I called from my cell phone. I was instructed to call their 800 #, make a new reservation for one week, wait an hour until it went through their system, agree to the extra charges because I didnt make a reservationearly enough, and once I had the car I was instructed to call corporate back and the secretary would fix the charges. I followed her instructions about the reservation, sat on the floor for almost another hour and when I approached the desk to sign for the car, the mgr said.... wait for it..... Good afternoon. Welcome to Alamo. How can I help you?... The corned beef never tasted as good.
