Robs Thought For The Week JUST IN CASE… Remember when you were filling out that job application and your pen ran out of ink? Well, I was the guy with the extra pen you could use. Remember when you came out of work and your car wouldn’t start because your battery was dead? Well, I was the guy with the battery cables! And, when lunch time came and you realized you left your money at home…well, I was the guy that loaned you money. The Boy Scouts say, “Be prepared”, and the military says, “Failing to plan, is planning to fail”, but I wasn’t either one. So, I guess I’m what you may call one of those “Just In Case” kind of guys! I think this may have started after I had a family and knew they depended on me, because I sure wasn’t like that when I was single! I was more of a “day to day” kind of guy then! But, after dealing with the added problems in life from being unprepared, I guess the light finally came on! Then I began to expect the unexpected, plan for the best, but prepare for the worst! Bring enough for an extra day or night, and usually bring enough to share with those who forgot to! I’m the guy with the extra ammo and a back-up…for the back-up! My son-in-law, Ryan, always kids me about everything I carry in my truck. If we’re all out somewhere on a family outing and someone forgot something, he jokingly asks if I have it in my truck! The funny thing is, I usually do! But, there’s one thing I know I don’t need to have an “extra” for, and that’s my God and my Savior! There’s only One…and I don’t need a back-up! But, the Apostle Paul ran into this during his missionary ministries. Athens, Greece was known for it’s philosophers and explorers of many different religions. Acts 17:16 tells us when he entered Athens, “…his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.” This didn’t deter his mission, but only fueled it! He spoke with many of the devout religious leaders and philosophers about Jesus Christ and the Resurrection. They considered this a “new” type of religion, so they wanted to know more. “Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions (altars/idols), I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you.” (Acts 17:22-23) They had created idols and altars to all the gods they knew about, but they made one more, “Just In Case” there was one they didn’t know! Paul’s preaching gained many more believers and they realized God was the only One they needed!
