Royal Botanic Garden. The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, est. 1816, is the oldest botanic garden and scientific institution in Australia. It is home to an outstanding collection of plants from around the world with a focus on Australia and the South Pacific. The Botanic Garden is set on Sydney Harbour, next to the Opera House. The Botanic Garden is surrounded by unfenced botanical parkland known as the Domain, which is accessible to the public 24 hours a day. Some of the important persons contributed to build this garden are as under: Governor Phillip: The first farm on the Australian continent, ‘nine acres in corn’ was established in 1788 by Governor Phillip. Governor Macquarie: The Botanic Gardens were founded on this site by Governor Macquarie in 1816 as part of the Governor’s Domain. Charles Fraser: The long history of collection and study of plants began with the appointment of the first Colonial Botanist, Charles Fraser, in 1817. The Botanic Gardens is thus the oldest scientific institution in Australia. Richard and Allan CunninghamAfter a succession of colonial botanists and superintendents, including the brothers Richard and Allan Cunningham. John Carne Bidwill: John was appointed as the first Director in 1847. He was succeeded by Charles Moore, Director for 48 years (1848-96), did much to Charles Moore: Charles Moore develop the Botanic Gardens in their modern form. Joseph Henry: Moore was succeeded by Joseph Henry Maiden who, during his 28-year term, added much to this garden.
