Leith Folk Club Rura come back to Leith Tuesday 10th September Hi Folks Last week we had a wonderful start to our Autumn season with a visit from Rallion. It was a really good night and i think everyone had a good time. There were some really positive posts on Facebook, which anyone can have a look at. Just go to Leith Folk Club on Facebook and you can read the recent posts, you do not have to be a Facebook member to look at the posts. This week we hope to maintain the high standard set by Rallion with another home grown group. One of the finest Scottish acts to emerge in recent times, Rura, simply haven’t looked back since bursting on to the folk scene in 2010. Announced as winners of a prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival 2011 and as ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, the powerhouse five-piece line-up of Rura has already performed across the UK, Europe and most recently in the U.S.A. Combining highland pipes, whistles, flute, fiddle, bodhran, guitar and vocals, their powerful, energetic performances breathe new life into traditional music and showcase Scotland’s emerging talent in new contemporary folk songs and instrumentals. Rura bookended the success of 2011 in December when, alongside producer Aidan O’Rourke (Lau/Kan) and recording engineer Ian Hutchison (Glo-worm Studios, Glasgow), the band recorded their debut album ‘Break it Up’. The album was released by Greentrax Records in March 2012 to great acclaim. Adam Holmes Only in the world of folk music could you imagine the bar staff at one of the liveliest, smokiest and most renowned music pubs in Britain, making a space at the end of the bar for an eight year old child to get the best view of the acts. That’s the experience of Edinburgh singer/songwriter Adam Holmes, who now at the age of twenty-one has already been a BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year finalist, as well as receiving a nomination for Best Newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Following the BBC Radio Scotland finals Adam went on to feature, alongside fellow finalist and band member Jack Smedley, in the 2009 TMSA Young Trad Tour. The tour continued to perform across the UK as ‘The Muckle Loons’ and from this stemmed a number of performance opportunities across the UK and Europe for Adam. During 2010/11 Adam continued to make an impression on Scotland’s folk scene and in 2011 rising folk group RURA asked him to join their ranks. Chris Waite Guitarist Chris Waite, is a sought after musician and teacher. Chris, originally from Chirnside in the Scottish Borders, began his musical career as a young piper in the Duns Pipe Band. For a number of years Chris continued his piping education under an array of tutors specialising in all styles of Scotland’s piping scene. During his teenage years Chris was inspired to explore and pursue a career in traditional music and was accepted in to the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School in the Scottish Highlands. It was here that Chris met renowned guitarist Jack Evans who has inspired much of Chris’s work as an accompanist since. Chris moved to Glasgow in 2007 to study Applied Music at Strathclyde University where he graduated in 2010. He has since gone on to establish himself as a well known musician on the scene and now, whether working as a guitarist, piper or whistle player, Chris features in a number of bands operating out of the vibrant world of Glasgow’s folk world including a brand new duo with singer Rachel Lightbody, Dr. Mango & the Chickpeas, Blaze in the Bothy and Kilter. Chris’s talents extend beyond performance and teaching. He has recorded a number of young and established artists over recent years and is quickly making a name for himself as an aspiring recording engineer. David Foley David is a product of Glasgow’s Irish folk music scene, a scene that fuses influences from both Scottish and Irish music. A versatile bodhran and flute player, David began as a young musician in the Comahltas organisation. David’s playing led him to success on the competition circuit at Feiseanna and Fleadhs across the UK which culminated in an ‘All Ireland Bodhran Champion’ title. David studied Scottish folk music alongside Jack and Steven at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he had been attending as a junior from the age of 16. David has featured in line-ups across the UK and overseas with recent trips to Russia, Sweden, Cuba and the U.S.A to name a few! Jack Smedley Jack, was brought up in Cullen on the Banffshire coast of North-East Scotland. His interest in folk music stems from years of following bands passing local festival Speyfest and from the many opportunities given to him as a youngster with local fiddle groups. Jack has always maintained a strong interest in all genres of music and a desire to explore the wider musical world within Scotland and further afield. In 2008 Jack moved to Glasgow to pursue his career in folk music and study BA Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Formerly RSAMD) where he graduated in 2012. Soon after, Jack was announced as a finalist in 2009’s BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year award, which led to his first big opportunities as a young professional. Following the finals, Jack and his 5 fellow finalists, including band member Adam Holmes, toured Scotland as the 2009 TMSA Young Trad Tour which, went on the following year to feature at many more festivals across the UK as the infamous Muckle Loons! The year ended with Jack teaming up with Steven, David, Adam and Chris to form RURA, who have quickly become a very popular act. Jack has featured as a soloist in many concerts across Scotland and has performed and taught alongside acts throughout the UK, Europe and U.S.A. Steven Blake Steven is considered to be one of the most talented young pipers in Scotland. He is equally at home with traditional piping, contemporary folk music and composition and possesses a unique style of playing which sets him apart from his peers. He is currently finishing his degree in Scottish Music at Glasgow’s Royal Conservitoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD). Perhaps best known for his work with RURA, over the last few years Steven has taken to the stage across the globe from Japan, Italy, Spain and the Ukraine to extensively touring the UK. From his beginnings as a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2008 he has set about forging a dynamic performance career. Steven has worked in big line ups such as The Unusual Suspects to intimate solo spots in chamber concerts. He has played on raucous festival stages including Heb Celt, Celtic Connections and the old fruit market in Glasgow and the main stage at toner festival in Denmark (appearing with the chieftains.) He has also taken the stage as a soloist with quite a few orchestral line ups including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Royal Northern College of Music’s Symphony Orchestra. He has proven himself at home with the formality of performances for the likes of Gordon Brown and Dame Vera Lynn and venues such as the Usher Hall, Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, the Gateshead Sage and the Chichester Festival Theatre to name but a few. As well as an unmistakable understanding and unique flare in traditional folk music Steven is well known for his love of experimentation and his constant flirtation with other musical genres, including experimental, indie, classical and jazz. The last time these boys played at Leith Folk Club, when we were still in the Village, the very famous Phil Cunningham came along to see them. This was mainly because three of the band were his students and he was checking up on them!
