Ryan Bell gave up Christianity after trying an experiment where he lived as an atheist for a year. I can think of no worse way to test if Christianity is true. Certainly many other people could try the experiment and come to the opposite conclusion. Perhaps someone could come to the conclusion that Islam or Buddhism is true from their experience. How would we know which is right? We would need an objective test beyond experience. Further, a Christian cannot live as an atheist for a year anymore than one can live as if gravity is false for a year. Christianity is a comprehensive worldview that accounts for everything in life from experience to the fact that anything exists at all. One cannot simply change the world he lives in by pretending its false for a year. I lived a year without reference to gravity for a year, so therefore its not relevant. What? Finally, his claim that we can have meaning in life without God is simply false. He claims his meaning is to find happiness and help others find happiness. Okay, but whose happiness? Mother Teresas? Hitlers? Charles Manson? Who is the judge? If everyone is, then his life as a saint would be no better than Stalins as Stalins view of life would be equally as authoritative as his own. All life ultimately has no real meaning or purpose, its just a flickering existence ultimately equalized and extinguished by the eventual death of humanity and ultimately the universe. The end is the same regardless of how you live. He might find meaning in this, but no actual or real meaning. Just his own--which is no more meaningful than Hitler.
