S2E14 The Icarus Factor #StarTrekTheNextGeneration Wow, Worf - TopicsExpress

S2E14 The Icarus Factor #StarTrekTheNextGeneration Wow, Worf is really touchy. Is the B plot going to be that Worf is sad that he never knew his biological parents? Apparently everybody is Riker’s dads old buddy. Youd think that would be more awkward. Data says there is a genetic predisposition toward aggression in Klingons. I dont know if thats space racist or not. Geordi: “You found the problem.” Data: “And you must solve it.” I dont think youre teaching Wesley a good life lesson here. Other than dont mention problems or youll get more work. Christ, OBrien and Riker, take a picture itll last longer. While Im glad Dr. Pulaski’s marriages ended amiably, this suggests she is a poor judge of character, or at least compatibility. So, Riker, it appears that Dr Pulaski, a woman under your command, totally banged your dad. Thats not going to be awkward, is it? Corny though it is, I really liked Data’s awkward trying-to-socialize-with-Worf scene. Deciding whats wrong with your friend by doing research into his culture that he is largely detached from andand drawing conclusions from that definitely seems space racist. Oops, way to accidentally dis Dr Pulaski, Riker. “Id be a fool to turn that promotion down, wouldnt I?” Well, if Starfleet is anything like modern militaries, yes. From the front the little decorative bits on the top of their uniforms always make it look like theyre wearing capes to me. Maybe it would be better if they were wearing caps. Riker looks like a mopey teenager who doesnt want to listen to his dad. Ironically, his dad is in this episode, but its Picard in this case. And Data accidentally disses Geordie by implying that he is not a “consummate professional.” Ive been really bothered by the sharp aliased edges whenever the Enterprise’s model is green screened in front of what Im guessing is a CG planet. Im guessing in the original broadcast it was not quite so obvious. Apparently Riker and his dad need to fight to sort things out. Like actual punching or something. Okay. I hope whatever space martial art theyre performing requires preposterous uniforms. If Dr. Pulaski is worried about one of them being injured, why does the enterprise even have the sparring ring? “Playing” anbo-jyutsu? This is going to be a terrible game, isn’t it? Klingon pain sticks can cause peoples heads to explode. “You know about that?” “All of your friends on board do.” I dont think you are very good counselor, Troi. That seems kind of isolating and conspiratorial. If its a secret only held only to Klingons, what’s it doing in the Enterprises database? Eva thinks that the Ascension anniversary ceremony will be a fiasco or at least zany. Im betting its going to work as designed. Although we’re 11 minutes from the end, so Im a little unsure. Apparently gender stereotypes have not changed in the future. Thats sad. So immediately after saying human males are unique in that their fathers treat their sons as though they are children their entire lives, Dr. Pulaski says, and I quote, “Its almost as if they never really grow up at all .” Apparently feminism died in the future. Thanks Riker’s dad for explaining to Riker a martial art form he has been practicing since he was 8. Joy, ridiculous costumes! Eva: “It’s like they decided they wanted to LARP Tron.”. Wait a second. Rikers dad left when Riker was 15. And Riker’s dad is currently gloating about having always beat Riker at this martial art. That must have happened when Riker was 15 or younger. Riker’s dad is an asshole. Apparently this martial art involves a lot of wandering around confused? This is the “ultimate martial art?” The subtitles claim that the quote is in an unknown language. Its obviously Japanese. The language printed on the arena and the uniforms, suggest that this is a Japanese invention. I dont know what to think of that. Even suggests it was inspired by Ninja Warrior. I approve of this thought. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasuke_%28TV_series%29 If the goal is to knock your opponent out of the ring, why do they keep using downward strokes? And he cheated to beat his 12-year-old son at a sport. Oh, god. Riker has every reason to hate this bastard. This heartfelt moment is slightly ruined by Riker wearing what is possibly the worlds most ridiculous sport helmet. Also, theres no space between the helmet and the head. That eliminates much of the benefit. I choose to interpret Troi’s look when Riker announces he wants to stay on the Enterprise as, “we had an emotional moment because you were leaving. Couldnt you have decided that before?” We were never given a clear reason why Riker decided to stay on the Enterprise, were we?
