SALUTE TO TIM NOAKES Just this past week I was fortunate enough to be present at the retirement function in honour of Professor Tim Noakes. While technically he will be retiring at the end of this year, it was made abundantly clear that he will not be ceasing to exist, but simply moving on from bureaucratic hindrances and continuing with his own work. Let me be upfront. I am a fan of the Professor. I know that at times, his name can bring up a bit of a negative vibe, particularly when your dinner guests are dieticians or seriously opinionated individuals. However, one cannot ignore the contribution that the man has made to the world. To ignore or disregard his latest Low Carb-High Fat (LCHF) “theme” as madness would be pure folly. I’m not implying that he’s 100% on the money, but he has done the world a huge service by making us reconsider what a “healthy diet” looks like. I would wager that he is closer to the mark than some would give him credit. His reputation of being a giant slayer counts for a lot. The debacle around appropriate hydration is a major indicator of the man’s ability and courage. I don’t know him personally, but from the accounts of those who spoke at the event and the anecdotes that were shared, I believe that Professor Noakes is a quality leader, as well as a true scientist on another level. It seems that almost everything that Professor Noakes has touched has been a raging success. A motivational letter to the 1995 Springboks, tackling hyponatremia, UCT Ikeys’ varsity cup success, Lewis Pugh’s freezing swims, and so on and so forth. A bit of a Midas touch, if you ask me. The event was an inspiring tribute to Prof Noakes, an event which leaves one desiring to be better at their vocation. Those who spoke at this event have led me to believe that this has been a hallmark of his interactions with people. To end off, below you will read a para-phrasing of something Prof Noakes said at his retirement function, followed by a clip that illustrates the point. “Believe in the impossible. Try to do the impossible… for if you don’t try then the impossible will always remain…” – Prof Tim Noakes https://youtube/watch?v=zxqftpqALz8
