SAM on Cross Cultural Marriages I attend one marriage here in Chennai that deserves attention. It was between an Urdu/ Hindi speaking north Indian Muslim girl with pure Tamil Muslim boy. While the groom can speak good English, his family members know no other language other than Tamil. Both bride and groom are highly placed in MNC in Chennai. They had consent from their family members and all their blessings. While the girl is teaching Hindi/Urdu to the boy, he is teaching Tamil to the girl. Tamil Muslims are much closed society and do not marry outside. They prefer marrying Christian and Hindus who are culturally closer to them, then Urdu speaking Tamils. In fact within Muslims there is a big divide on linguistic basis and the two do not inter-marry. The groom family is bit enterprising as his brother married an Arabic speaking Moroccan girl, who is well adjusted in the Tamil family. Well these developments are symptoms of fast changing society in India. The pace of development has over taken social norms. The controversy of ‘love-jihad,’ is a villain in such set piece of love script. The more it’s ignited the fiercer the flame of love may glow. After its celebration of love in the end and struggling for it is norm of the day.
