SAMOHI CLASS ‘68 NAME: Paul Zygielbaum MAIDEN NAME: ➢ WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Santa Rosa, CA ➢ ARE YOU MARRIED? Yes ➢ DID YOU MARRY A CLASSMATE? No. ➢ WHO? Michelle Margolese. She was a nursing student at USC Med Center. We were a blind date set up by my Caltech roommate and Michelle’s best friend, who were dating. I proposed 6 weeks later. ➢ WHERE DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE? Caltech, and later Golden Gate University ➢ WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE IN HIGH SCHOOL? Aerospace manager/executive ➢ WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION? Now retired, having been an aerospace engineer, then electric power industry R&D manager, then manufacturing engineer and manager with Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies, then international executive consultant in manufacturing and R&D, then briefly retired, then co-founder and COO/CEO of a Silicon Valley medical device startup. ➢ WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL JOB YOU EVER HAD? Leading an executive consulting team for Agilent Technologies covering Europe, Russia and the Middle East, while living near Amsterdam. ➢ WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL? Tough to decide on the professional side. At 26 years old, I represented the US electric utility industry in negotiations held in Moscow between the US Depts of Energy and State with the Soviet Academy of Sciences for joint energy research projects. In the late 1990s and after, I was in international demand as an executive consultant in test strategy and integration processes for complex aerospace systems (mainly communications satellites and missiles). After my diagnosis and initial treatment for asbestos-related cancer in 2004, my wife and I became well-known on Capitol Hill, advocating for legislation to protect the rights of asbestos poisoning victims, to ban asbestos in US commerce, and to improve medical care and research in the field. From 2006-2012, I was part of the executive team that led the development of a revolutionary, non-invasive glucose sensor that almost made it to market (a victim of business issues, although the technology concept was proven). But life is more important than all that, and my greatest accomplishment was having a wonderful woman at my side for the past 42 years, raising 3 fabulous children with her, and surviving to enjoy 5 grandchildren so far! ➢ WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Having stood for our civil liberties, especially the right to sue under the 7th Amendment, the separation of church and state, and voting rights. ➢ NAME 3 OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS IN HIGH SCHOOL? “Cant Take My Eyes Off of You,” Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons “California Girls,” the Beach Boys “Please Mr. Postman,” The Marvelettes ➢ WHERE DID YOU LIKE TO HANG OUT? With the drama class at lunch. They were a hoot! ➢ WHAT DID YOU DO IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT NO ONE KNEW ABOUT? Worked for my dad, transcribing his translations and analyses of Soviet military and space journal articles for NASA and DOD. ➢ WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY? Graduation, sitting with a particular young lady. ➢ WHO IS THE ONE PERSON IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE AGAIN? Pam (Getty) Nelson. ➢ IF YOU KNEW THEN WHAT YOU KNOW NOW YOU WOULD….. Have more confidence in myself and stand up for what I wanted. Paul Zygielbaum - Delian Board, Douglas Science Club Pres. ZARP
