SCHOLARSHIP - Deadline: Postmarked by July 31, 2014. Tutor the People Essay Scholarship Tutor the People, a lower Manhattan-based tutoring service specializing in graduate admissions test prep (GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE) and undergraduate course help announces an essay contest awarding $500 to one student who best exemplifies the spirit of helping others achieve success. Tutor the People is committed to its mission of helping unprivileged students gain access to higher education, particularly for those who live in low socioeconomic areas. We believe that in order to create opportunities for entire communities, we must first devote attention to individuals and lead others by example. Our first scholarship contest challenges entrants to write a (typed) one-page personal story in which you explain how you have helped a member of your community achieve a personal or academic goal. Show us how you have helped someone, either in school, at work, in a sports league, volunteer organization, or other realm of life by being a leader, a teacher, or simply a good friend. Your essay should describe in detail the person you have helped, the challenge or struggle you helped them overcome, and what insights you gained in the process. Please follow the guidelines listed below. Criteria for Scholarship Entry: Eligible students must: Be enrolled in an accredited high school, college or university in the United States Currently be in their senior year of high school or enrolled as an undergraduate in a U.S accredited post-secondary institution Hold academic “Good Standing” at current institution (not on academic probation or suspension) Have a current cumlulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (or equivalent) Essay Submission Details: Please provide the following: Your typed, one-page essay in a legible font (Times New Roman, Arial, or other common, legible font; 12 pt) with your full name, email address, phone number, and home address at the top Printed, official transcript or statement of your GPA from your school Optional, not required: A list of any relevant volunteer experience that helps support your story. For any experience listed, please provide: Name of the Organization Brief (1-2 sentence) description of work performed Number of service hours performed Contact information of Supervisor and Organization: Name, Phone Number, and Email address Scholarship Deadline: All entries must be postmarked by July 31, 2014. Please note, entries must be submitted via U.S. mail to the mailing address below. Any entry received via e-mail or fax will not be accepted. No other additional documents or forms (letters of recommendations, etc.) are required. Other Important Scholarship Information: All entry information can be found on this page; there is no formal application form to fill out. Students may only submit one entry per contest period. Your example does not need to involve tutoring; your essay can describe any experience in which you have helped another person achieve their goals. Winner Selection Process: Once entries are received, they will be read by a selection committee composed of experienced tutors. The decision of the committee will be based on which essay exemplifies the greatest level of commitment to helping others and achieving a goal. The winning student will be selected and notified of their $500 prize by August 31, 2014, for the Fall Semester.
