SEACRET AGENTS- I wrote this article for the PARABEN - TopicsExpress

SEACRET AGENTS- I wrote this article for the PARABEN HATERS! Parabens are Safe and Natural Believe it or Not? Preservatives are used in food to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Without it, almost everything you use like shampoos, foundation, eye make up, lip stick, lotions, sun block, face cream and foods you love like sodas, cereal, apple pie, juice, candy bars, and your local trip to IHOP where the syrup contains the highest amount of parabens in any food is contained would put a dent in your system. READY TO BE SHOCKED! Parabens are Natural! Ironically, parabens are naturally occurring chemicals produced by vegetables and fruits. Foods such as soy, beans, flax, cherries, blueberries, carrots, and cucumbers produce parabens and other chemicals that mimic estrogen—to a much greater degree than the miniscule amounts of parabens used in skin care and cosmetics. Here are the conclusion of the world’s top scientific minds and third party industry safety advocate community’s conclusion. 1. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) . (The CIR is an industry-sponsored organization that reviews cosmetic ingredient safety and publishes its results in open, peer-reviewed literature.) reviewed the safety of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben in 1984 and concluded they were safe for use in cosmetic products at levels up to 25%. Typically parabens are used at levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.3%. 2. The American Cancer Society has concluded, based on its research findings, that the scientific and medical research does not support a claim that the use of parabens in cosmetics can increase an individual’s risk of developing breast cancer. 3. The FDA began studying the effects of parabens in response to the outcry of their potential estrogenic effect and link to breast cancer. The FDA found that parabens are safe for use in cosmetics, and it also says that, based on the weight of all the current scientific evidence, there is no reason for consumers to be concerned about the use of products containing parabens. 4. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety: Final Opinion on Parabens, which is the official statement by the European Union on the unequivocal safety of parabens in skin care, cosmetics and personal care products. This summary of decades of long-term and short-term safety data reinforced the EUs previous decision that parabens are safe in personal care products. 5. Health Canada, the Canadian FDA-equivalent, also finds that, "Currently, there is no evidence to suggest a causal link between parabens and breast cancer." 6. The Personal Care Products Council, a US organization that reviews and assesses the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open, unbiased and expert manner, consolidated more than 265 studies in The Journal of Toxicology that noted a women’s daily cosmetic regimen using products that contain parabens caused no adverse reproductive effects and confirmed the safety of parabens. Parabens has been used as a food and cosmetic preservative for the last 50 years, so what is all the negative media press and scare all about? A study published in 2004 (Darbre, in the Journal of Applied Toxicology) detected parabens in breast tumors. The study also discussed this information in the context of the weak estrogen-like properties of parabens and the influence of estrogen on breast cancer. However, the study left several questions unanswered. For example, the study did not show that parabens cause cancer, or that they are harmful in any way, and the study did not look at possible paraben levels in normal tissue. The study also mistakenly linked to to breast cancer when their metabolites (not parabens themselves) were detected in the breast cancer tissue samples. Here’s the real deal! Media, marketing strategies, and the “Non chemical based” ingredient advocates immediately jumped on the band wagon touting that parabens were evil, bad and would cause cancer. Aveda was one of the first companies to tout that their products were “Paraben Free” yet other preservatives, not studied as much as parabens and not occurring in nature, were used instead of parabens. Due to the overwhelming perception by the public and being mis-informed, companies started putting on the shelf the label paraben free yet no guidelines or standards are given by the FDA or any other organization as to what that actually means. As for me, every time I eat blueberries, cherries, tofu, and carrots I will think of the parabens Im ingesting and every visit to my pancake store with all the yummy syrup I will think of parabens and be thankful for them. The fact is, the modern world needs preservatives, if it is a necessity of modern life, why not stick with the one that most scientists deem safe, and it actually occurs in nature! The next time you see parabens, think blue-berry preservatives! As a Seacret agent, when I think that Seacret products are mostly paraben fee, I think that our company is being sensitive to the consumer’s perception, and the products that do have paraben, like in our Recover mask, lotion, it is methy-paraben the same paraben in blue-berries!
