Have you ever seen one? Its scientific name is Paederus littoralis. Size ranges from 1 to 35 mm (1.5 inches), with most in the range of 2-8 mm. The body is dark orange , while the upper, lower abdomen and head are black. The upper middle of the dark green has a pair of hard wing known as the elitron. Under the hard wings are a pair of transparent wings neatly folded. Often, the beetle is seen crawling around swiftly with hidden wings superficially resembling ants. When disturbed it raises the abdomen that looks like a scorpion to frighten the enemy. Rove beetle @ tomcat has been found in the rice fields, school fields - between grass etc.. It is a carnivorous insect eating other smaller insects. It is an insect that plays an important role in biological control rice pest control. During heavy rains or floods, the beetle migrate to drier areas. BUT, beware its EFFECT if they touched your skin! Haemolymph fluid found in the body (except the wings) of the beetle contains the most poisonous toxin in the world. These toxins are known as Pederin (C24 H43 O9 N). It is 12 times more poisonous than cobra venom. Contacted with the beetle while lying down or sleeping, destroy the body or rubbing with a dirty finger would cause conjunctivitis and severe skin disease that are recognized as Dermatitis Linearis. If you see the Tomcat @ Rove beetle perched on hand, DO NOT push or killed as deadly mosquitoes or other small insects. Tomcat should be blown up to go, or be taken carefully using hand tools or covered in plastic and dumped into a safe place. After that, wash your hands with soap and repeat again. If you can, spray it with insect poison and removed without having to touch it directly. How to prevent it? Since the beetle is attracted to lights at night, close or minimize the lights and close all doors. Be careful if you have small childrens who like to play near the plant and get rid of the plant if the conditions are not maintained as it could potentially become a den of Tomcat. This is only if you lived nearby a farm, or something like moist places. Be save out there.
