SEEDS FOR VICTORY The Cardinals will be taking on the Chargers - TopicsExpress

SEEDS FOR VICTORY The Cardinals will be taking on the Chargers in a little less than 4 hours and tension is as high as ever. As the season kicks off, several questions about the team should be answered by the end of the 4th quarter. How will the new front seven do? Is this secondary as good as hyped? Can Carson Palmer prove to be an asset and not a liability? As it stands though, with all these nagging questions, the primary objective still stands as such: come out with a win. With every game, there are seeds for victory, things the cardinals will have to do to come out with the W. These can vary from opponent to opponent, here are the seeds for tonight. 1) PUNISH PHILIP RIVERS Last season under offensive coordinator and former Cardinals coach, Ken Whisenhunt, quarterback Philip Rivers flourished and had a comeback year. When Rivers was on fire, the Chargers were unstoppable. Like every quarterback though, Rivers has a tendency to struggle under pressure. The new and improved secondary should blanket all possible receiving options; the more time Rivers has to take going through his progressions, the better the opportunity for the pass rush to put him in the dirt. Rivers two primary targets, Keenan Allen and Antonio Gates, need to be made a non-factor if the Cardinals want to shut down Rivers. Given the Cardinals struggles with tight end coverage in the past, theyll need to apply tight coverage to shut him out. 2) MENTAL ERRORS One common trend throughout the preseason was unnecessary penalties. A false start here, a hold there, and other simple mental errors cost the Cardinals a lot. You can call it jitters or you can blame the stricter penalty policies, but what is apparent is the Cardinals need to cut back on their penalties. You can win if you give up chunks of yardage for free. 3) CROWD FACTOR The most important aspect of every home game is the fan factor, we need you LOUD. You have to be out there screaming your lungs out, forcing false starts and making the Chargers feel the pressure. We dont want to disappoint Kurt Warner, the national media, and the world: we want to show them we mean business. Its time to dethrone the 12th man, the real 12th man lives in Glendale, Arizona.
