SEEK PERMISSION FIRST - KHAMA H.E. th President, Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, has advised public officers who want to own businesses to seek permission before pursuing such interests. Addressing public servants at Moses Mengwe Junior Secondary School in Maitengwe on Thursday April 24, President Khama said it was wise for them to prepare for retirement and not only rely on their packages. President Khama said government would set up guidelines for public officers who wanted to own businesses and the kind of businesses to operate. President Khama said it was important that public officers who intended to own business sought permission to prevent the situation where they would use government time to run their enterprises. He explained that owning businesses would not only increase the income of a public officer but also add to Botswana’s economy because such businesses would create jobs for other Batswana. Meanwhile, Mr Trust Moalosi of Tribal Administration complained about time taken to replace boarded vehicles saying it took long thus affecting their performance. He also suggested that the issuing of cattle sale permits be done at councils since payments were done there. Mr Moalosi further said most of the customary courts did not have office cleaners. Other officers complained about office space, shortage of staff as well as of office accommodation. In response, President Khama said all ministries were permitted to service their vehicles at private garages or Central Transport Organization (CTO) or use both. He added that the delay by CTO to replace boarded vehicles might be caused by ministries which do not forward funds on time. Director of DPSM Mr Carter Morupisi urged the deputy district commissioners and council secretaries to visit schools to ensure that operations and other logistics were in good shape. Mr Morupisi also appealed to social workers in Tutume to make sure that their customers were helped well on time. President Khama appreciated public officer’s comments, saying efforts would be made to improve their general conditions of service. (BOPA)
