SKILLS REQUIRED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL LEADER If we want to change the quality of life in our country Then we clearly have to affect the value systems of a mass of people Our future lies in the hands of our youth What does it take to be a successful leader? Leadership means different things to different people and no single definition is universally accepted However, leadership is clearly a role that leads toward goal achievement and involves interaction of influences Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal One might ask, Is a leader born or made? Some people seems to be naturally endowed with more leadership abilities than others, yet people can learn to become a leader by concentrating on improving particular leadership skills Leadership is the combination of personal traits and the ability to think and act as a leader Theodore Hesburgh, President of The University of Notre Dame state and I quote; “The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision it’s got to be a vision you anticipate clearly and forcefully on every occasion” Also James Kouzy and Barry Posner state and I quote; “There is nothing more demoralizing than a leader who can’t clearly articulate why we’re doing what we’re doing” Leaders should be enthusiastic Leaders should appreciate God for who He is Leaders must be secure in God Leaders need to be content with what they have Listen to what their followers have to say Need to be skillful in what they do Use powerful, positive language in their interaction with others Put praise in writing (Have a thankful heart) Keep their commitments to their followers Give followers public credit for their contribution Leaders need to be bold, strong and courageous Leaders must be good decision makers Above all, leadership is an awesome responsibility not to be taken lightly. Therefore Godly leaders; Finds strength by realizing their weakness Finds authority by being under authority Finds direction by laying down their plans Finds vision by seeing the needs of others Finds credibility by being an example Finds loyalty by expressing compassion Finds honor by being faithful Finds greatness by being a servant The art of leadership is the act of service.
