SKIPPER COX called me yesterday and shared his deep regret that he wasn’t able to join us at our 45th Reunion. He mentioned that he has enjoyed reading all of our reunion stories on our FB page, and says the pictures are really great. He had planned on coming to the Reunion, and in fact was one of the first to send in his registration form. However, as we all can attest to, our lives and plans change in an instant as we meet unforeseen circumstances. Interesting fact here though, is that it’s the second time Skipper’s Reunion plans have been interrupted. In 2009 Skipper was diagnosed with cancer right before our 40th Reunion, so he had to cancel his plans to attend and immediately met his cancer fight head on. He underwent a procedure on his throat, as well as the necessary medical regimen to heal. And he did heal, for 5 years. Right before our Reunion on the 13th, he had a check up and learned that the cancer was back and had spread. I understand that it is a very rare medullary cancer, which I believe is cancer of the thyroid. Right before the reunion Skipper had another surgery procedure, and he had hoped to recover in time for the Reunion; yet, the recovery stage is a process and it’s taking a bit longer than he planned. However, he wanted me to share with everyone that he’s on the mend, feeling stronger every day and has high hopes and good faith in his care, especially with his MD Anderson medical staff and doctors, and his wife Mari, son Adam, and daughter Lindsey. He’s been married since 1975 and still lives in Garland. Due to his illness he assumed retirement early from the job he held at Raytheon from 1989-2009, where he was a Manager in the Human Resources Department recruiting engineers from all over the world. I have had some great conversations with Skipper lately, and he’s still a sweet, fun, and genuine guy with a very positive attitude, like I remember from school. Let’s keep him in our thoughts and prayers; feel free to post a note to him.
