SMI Lesson 1 - Summary relating to your own experience INTRODUCTION • Principal ingredient of success =/= only ingredient. • Measurable difference --> personal motivation. • “He harbours a type a type of constructive discontent with things as they are and strives to make them better.” A successful person maintains on the active stance and does not let the external environment affect him/her. ABUNDANCE • On abundance, I used to think it in the external sense that the world is abundant and we should practise the concept of abundance and not view the world as finite, and reading this text made me gain new insights that there is abundance that exists within. • “Where most people begin to experience doubt is in realizing that there is an abundance within themselves equal to that in the world around them”… “If man experiences a shortage (of whatever nature) it stems from his self imposed limitations of thought.” I guess too frequently, I forget this and sub-consciously impose limitations on myself and not fully step up to the game. OPPORTUNITY • “Recognise existing opportunities by relating the normally unrelated by seeing usual things in unusual ways.” … “To find opportunity, man must look to the present and the future, not the past.” … “Opportunity is under the dominion of the law of cause and effect. If we fail to look for it, we fail to see it.” … “Many men have found their biggest opportunities in their own mistakes and failures.” … “Every business is always open to new ideas that will create sales or improve products and services.” • What I learnt here is that we are not confined to what is given to us. Simply waiting for opportunities is not enough, we must go out and create opportunities. Creating opportunities takes more thought and effort than it seems, we have to be innovative and approach in various angles, and never stop looking for opportunities everywhere. THE POWER OF CHOICE • “Each choice has its consequence, and if man is to control outcomes, he must control the decisions and choices he makes” – To understand that our actions create an effect and to focus on our activities and actions which in turn gives us the results that we are looking for. • “What may be right for one is not necessarily right for another. A man must learn to have faith in his own guidance system and develop his power of choice by use of that power.” … “He realises that he, more than anyone else, is eminently more qualified to determine what is best for him. He knows that all the world stands aside for the man who knows where he is going, but it gives ground only grudgingly to the substitute – the man whose direction is for him by someone else.” – To have a clear direction that you choose for yourself. When you make that choice with strong emotions attached to it, it resonates within you and is much more powerful than someone else’s wants/desires/choices. • “The longer one delays making choices, the less likely he is to make a good choice. Conversely, the more one exercises his ability to choose, the more choices he will have.” … “To make good decisions, a man must make a habit of decision-making. When he does, the fact that he has made a choice frees his mental and emotional faculties from frustration and marshals all his forces in support of his choice.” – It is a habit to exercise our Power of Choice, and we have to exercise it in order to be more proficient in making wise choices. It is trainable skill that we must hone in order to be successful. • “He is the only known creature that has the power to choose his environment, his associates, his conditions and his thoughts.” … “No one can shut the door to his future but himself. That is a rare privilege and a grave responsibility because doing what he wants to do and becoming what he wants to become is ultimately what constitutes man’s success in life.” – Having the Power of Choice is what sets us apart from other species, and we have to utilise this unique distinction that we have to enable us to thrive and succeed. • Having the Power of Choice reminds us that we are not bounded by our conditions, and that we have the choice to shape our personality and choice to take actions for success. • “Most of all, he must know that, if he waits for favourable conditions before deciding, he will inevitably fail. Accomplishment comes only through overcoming obstacles and roadblocks that stand in the way of his progressive realisation of whatever goals he considers to be worthy of his best efforts.” – Don’t hesitate to take action! https://youtube/watch?v=FrrlEaffZ4w
