SOME HAPPENINGS FROM DALE AND WENDY Hello from Fiji, BULA! - TopicsExpress

SOME HAPPENINGS FROM DALE AND WENDY Hello from Fiji, BULA! It’s 5.45 pm here and a beautiful and warm sunny day. This morning we went on a jet boat ride up the Sigatoki River – the longest river in Fiji. We travelled upstream to a small village, and then spent a few hours with the villagers. The oldest visiting male is chosen to be the ‘Chief’ of the visitors – and lucky for Dale, he was the oldest man! Hence, he had to be the spokesman for the group of tourists, drink lots of kava – (google kava and find out all about it!), and also give a thankyou speech at the end of the visit. We were shown through the village – and viewed houses, kitchens, the church etc. We were also served a lovely lunch in the community building – sitting on the floor, of course! Cam Batkin will appreciate just how important the ‘Chief” role was! We had a great and safe flight over to Fiji on Monday – and were struck by the warmth and humidity as soon as we arrived. So nice not to need a coat! We’re really happy with the resort we’re staying at – apparently it’s the only Fijian owned and operated resort in Fiji. As a result we do seem to be offered a really cultural holiday! The pool is great, the beach is also lovely, and so far the meals have been fine as well. Tomorrow Wendy is going to check out the diving, and hopefully book a scuba dive for Friday or Saturday. We also want to visit some of the local markets when we can. We hope to send you another email before we head to our village homestay on Sunday. We feel much more confident about our village homestay after visiting the village that we did today – and we’re also glad that we have arranged to do this, as we are learning so much about traditional village life, and we’re not just staying at some 5 star resort that we could easily do at the Gold Coast. While we’re staying in the village next week, we probably won’t be able to communicate with anyone at all, but will be back in touch around the 11 or 12th. We commence our village homestay on Sunday morning, and were a bit worried that we wouldn’t have the opportunity to join in Fiji church. But we found out today that every village has 2 services of a Sunday – one in the morning and another about 3.oopm in the afternoon. We’re both looking forward to that! The church we saw today has no pews or seats, so if that’s the norm we’ll be hoping for a fairly short sermon, as our legs are not used to sitting on the floor for long periods. From Chief Dale, and Wendy
