SOUTH PERTH.WA.Gaiety Theatre. The movie-going residents of South Perth were well catered for over the years. The GAIETY THEATRE was located on the corner of Angelo and Coode Street and opened in 1927. The HURLINGHAM PICTURE GARDENS on the Canning Highway opened in 1933 and was followed two years later by the hard-top HURLINGHAM PICTURE THEATRE a few doors away from its open-air namesake. (A house separated the two!) The luxurious art-deco COMO THEATRE opened in 1938 and also had its own open-air Picture Gardens alongside. The COMO Gardens closed in 1970 but the hardtop would outlive all the earlier theatres and still operates today as the CYGNET CINEMA. The old Gaiety closed as a cinema in July 1960 and was used for storing bank furniture for many years, finally being demolished in 1980. All these venues were at one time operated by the West Australian cinema pioneer, James Stiles and his Grand Theatre company.
