SOUTH YORKSHIRE WHEELIE BIN ARSONS CONCERN Fire service chiefs have attacked arsonists for wasting crews’ time with a spate of wheelie bin fires. Bins were torched in streets in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham on Bonfire Night - and arsonists also set cars and a garage on fire. Fires involving wheelie bins were at: Carlton Street, Cudworth, at 7pm on Tuesday; Wesley Avenue, Swallownest, at 8pm on Tuesday; Fell Brig Road, Arbourthorne, at 9pm on Tuesday, Linley Lane, Frecheville, at 9.50pm on Tuesday; Gaunt Road, Gleadless, at 10.50pm on Tuesday; White Thorns Drive, Batemoor, at 1.45am on Wednesday. Other deliberate fires involved a garage on Library Close, Wingfield, Rotherham, at 1.45am on Wednesday. The building was filled with furniture and fire crews managed to prevent the flames spreading to a house. A Toyota MR2 car was set alight on Masters Crescent, Sheffield Lane Top, at 8.30pm on Tuesday. “These arson attacks could delay firefighters attending more serious blazes where lives are at risk,” a fire service spokesman said.
