SPOILER ALERT (if you have not watched Voyager yet) As I watch - TopicsExpress

SPOILER ALERT (if you have not watched Voyager yet) As I watch Voyager again, Ive noticed one thing that has always bothered me just a little bit about the show. The addition of the Maquis crew members in the beginning made sense. Most of them were made lower level crew members and the only ones that were given senior staff positions were actually ex-Starfleet personnel. So that makes sense. However, the addition of non alpha quadrant aliens into the crew (specifically the senior staff) doesnt make sense to me. And how they are given (and take upon themselves without asking) responsibilities much greater than those of the ACTUAL Voyager crew. For example, in Basics when Janeway instructs the crew to break up into separate groups to search for means to survive Neelix calls out Delta team with me! WHAT? Youre not an official member of the Starfleet crew and certainly do not outrank any of the people who follow you into your delta team. Why are you allowed to bark out orders to the Voyager crew? You havent attended the academy. You have no rank. WTF? And then in Year Of Hell Janeway instructs the crew to use the escape pods and shuttlecrafts to escape. She says Only the senior staff will remain behind with her. So why the hell is Seven Of Nine still there after everyone abandons ship? She is BARELY a passenger on the ship. She only joined the crew 6 episodes earlier. She has been a borg her entire life. She has never been a member of starfleet. She is not an actual crew member. So WHY, I ask, WHY is she remaining behind with the senior staff? (I realize it is so they could keep her in the episode. Especially since she was the new hot aspect of the show) If they had put in a scene where Janeway tells her to leave and she asks to stay behind, then I would be fine with it. But they never explain why she stays with the senior staff. It just bugs me that they haphazardly give these important duties to the non-crew people without explanation. These are only a couple of examples. There are plenty more throughout the series. I realize it has more to do with including the main cast in the stories, but they could at least give explanations as to why these people are allowed to be higher up in the command structure.
